I am pleased to announce that Guy Withers and myself are currently beginning creative work on our next opera with Indomitable Productions! Although what it is has not officially been revealed yet, what I will say is that it is a piece adapted from a pretty well known narrative that we are letting fill the genre of opera.
So that's what is encompassing us at the moment. Cuttings of narrative everywhere, trying to rearrange the story without loosing any integrity, but necessarily cutting parts out because otherwise we would have a very long opera. And I mean very long.
It's lovely to work with Guy again from scratch. Although we created both of Indomitable's previous shows together, we had similar roles to the ones we're in now when we did Pride and Prejudice with Cardiff University Operatic Society. I helped him arrange and rearrange Austen's story, and then left him to take the music he hears in his brain to write down upon a score. This time, the libretto is very much my responsibility. Guy is providing the much needed objective eye, just like the ear I will offer when he begins composing. His excitement for this project is stimulus in itself and I am keen to really get my teeth into it.
We've allowed ourselves time with this project: five years to be precise. I endeavour for this production to be based upon what I am learning from my MA at Central, in terms of producing and marketing, planning and organising the event, but also embedded in the sense of collaboration; which is the very core of Indomitable too.
So although these updates on this particular project might feel sparse, at the moment I'm enjoying investing my time and doing this in the way that feels right to us at Indomitable. But don't fret - there's much more creativity I can update you on.
